BAMMA 6 Results: Tom Watson Retires Murilo 'Ninja' Rua

Tom "Kong" Watson retained his BAMMA middleweight title Saturday night by defeating Murilo "Ninja" Rua via third-round TKO at BAMMA 6. "Kong" used a wide array of kicks to finish the former EliteXC middleweight champion.

Following the loss, "Ninja," the older brother of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, announced his retirement from MMA on his Twitter account.

"I would like to announce officially my retirement from pro MMA fights," Rua wrote. "It was an amazing run, and [it's] a very tough moment, but there comes a time for all in life, and it's time to move on. I am proud of all I did in MMA and all experiences I had. I will continue to work with MMA, doing seminars, [teaching] classes, training fighters, and doing my share to help our sport that I love so much. It's time now to help others and enjoy my family, my wife, my kids and move [on]."

The 31-year-old Rua leaves MMA with a 20-12-1 record. He began his career in May 2000, and along the way, fought for PRIDE, DREAM, EliteXC and Cage Rage.

The win improved Watson's record to 14-4 overall at 10-1 in his last 11 fights.

Trailer: Fastest ? The Sequel to Faster

Mark Neale has been a busy man lately, first putting out Charge, his movie on the first two electric races at the Isle of Man, and now with Fastest, his follow-up to the must-own MotoGP DVD Faster. Following Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, Fastest starts with the two riders' time together as teammates in the Fiat-Yamaha MotoGP squad, and watches that team-dynamic turn into a heated rivalry. Talking to the filmmaker the other day, it sounds like Neale is still putting the final touches on the film, but was ecstatic with how it was coming together. If it's half as good as the trailer, we should be in for a real treat.

Fighters approve of health insurance, but what does it mean for fans?

When news broke that the UFC has decided to give fighters health insurance through their training camps, fighters were, understandably, excited. Several fighters quickly tweeted their approval.

This insurance will cover fighters' injuries while they are in camp. It's a huge victory for fighters and a smart move by Zuffa, but what does it mean for the fans?

It means that we'll see better fights. Fighters won't feel the need to go through their bouts with injuries just to get their medical expenses covered. A fighter is rarely at 100 percent when he or she goes into a fight, but now it will be less likely to see a fighter go through with a bout when it's not the smart or healthy move. Fighting with a torn ACL, a broken bone or a concussion will no longer be necessary, and healthier fighters make for well matched-up, more exciting fights.

Or as veteran fighter Jason High tweeted, "Nothing worse than seeing someone you know is injured fight anyway so they can get their [expletive] fixed."

Video analysis: Iole/Meltzer on what’s next for Sonnen

Kevin Iole and Dave Meltzer give their reaction to what went down with Chael Sonnen in front of the California State Athletic Commission.

Update this afternoon from MMAWeekly:

The commission has now finalized Sonnen's timeline as to when he would be able to re-apply for a license in the state. According to the California State Athletic Commission, Sonnen's suspension will run through his current license expires on June 29, 2011.

Folllowing the expiration of his license, Sonnen will not be able to re-apply for a new license in the state until at least May 18, 2012. At that time, Sonnne can re-apply for a license in the state of California, but there are still no guarantees he will be approved.

Looks like Sonnen and UFC will be faced with the choice of snubbing California and heading elsewhere or the fighter will be sidelined until the middle of 2012. The extension of the penalty is similar to what California did to Antonio Margarito. We're not comparing what Margarito was caught doing (loading his handwraps with a plaster-like substance) to Sonnen's offense, but the state left the fighter with no recourse and no way to make a living. Frankly, that's a ridiculous penalty in this case.

Update: The CSAC was "confused" and now Sonnen is eligible to re-apply this year.

"Upon reviewing the May 18, 2011 decision of the commission, an error in the applicability of Rule 399 was made," stated a release issued today by the commission. "The rule states that, 'Any applicant who has been denied an application for a license may not file a similar application until one year from the date of the last previous denial by the commission. Any application filed within the one year period may be denied without the necessity of a hearing. Anyone who has had his license revoked may not petition for reinstatement or apply for a new license until one year after the date of such revocation. Any petition for reinstatement filed within the one year period may be denied without the necessity of a hearing.'

"Since the commission did not revoke or deny Mr. Sonnen's license, the rule does not apply."

Michael Bisping Defends 'Rampage' Jackson

A few eyebrows were raised when Quinton "Rampage" Jackson said on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour that he wasn't particularly excited to fight Matt Hamill at UFC 130. That's just not something we're used to hearing from a main event fighter.

Then, on a Thursday conference call, Jackson clarified his remarks, admitting that a fire was lit under him after hearing Hamill say he wanted to break Jackson's will.

To get a real sense of how motivated Jackson has been leading up to the fight, MMA Fighting asked Michael Bisping, Jackson's friend and training partner, about Jackson's comments, and not surprisingly, "The Count" defended "Rampage."

"The guy's been around as long as anybody," Bisping said. "He's been around the very top level of the sport for a long time, so you know, I'm not saying he's bored but maybe some of the novelty has worn off a little bit and maybe he's grown tired of some of the ... I mean, of course there's a lot of fantastic things that come along with being involved as a mixed martial artist, but there's a few things that are a pain in the a** as well, and maybe some of those are growing on him a little bit."

Bisping later said he understood why Jackson wasn't all too excited when he heard the news that Hamill would be replacing Thiago Silva as his UFC 130 opponent.

"Hamill, while he is a fantastic fighter and a threat to most people in the light heavyweight division -- no way, shape or form knocking Matt Hamill -- I know that 'Rampage' wanted to get the title back one day, and I don't think beating Matt Hamill would be a fight that would maybe get him a title shot. So perhaps that's why he wasn't so excited."

For his part, Jackson took to Twitter Thursday evening to further explain his demeanor in recent interviews, writing:

"Since so many people r talking about my interviews, if I'm asked stupid questions u will get a certain interview, others get funny interviews."

Jackson vs. Hamill headlines UFC 130 on May 28. The main card airs live on pay-per-view.
