Dana White 'Almost 100 Percent Positive' Matt Hughes Will Retire

Filed under:

DENVER -- After getting knocked out by Josh Koscheck near the end of the first round at UFC 135, Matt Hughes specifically said he was "not retiring."

"I'm going to tell the UFC to put me up on a shelf and we'll see what happens after that," he said.

But to UFC president Dana White, it sounded like perhaps the closest that the über-competitive Hughes could ever bring himself to admitting that his time in the sport may be done.

"I think he's going to retire," White said at Saturday night's post-fight press conference. "I just don't think Hughes wants to say the word 'retire,' is what I think."

Hughes didn't make an appearance at the post-fight presser, though he offered his services if needed, White said. The UFC boss told him he could skip it, but he also told reporters that he expects to have a conversation with the former welterweight champion soon that will finally put the matter of his uncertain future to rest.

"There was a lot of talk that this was the last fight on his contract; I don't know if that's true or not, because he's a guy I've never worried about last fights or whatever," White said. "...He's going to fly out to Vegas in the next month or so and sit down and talk, but I'm pretty sure he's going to retire -- without saying 'retirement.'"

After hurting Hughes with a solid right hand and then finishing him with hammer fists in the final seconds of the opening round, Koscheck said he expressed his respect and admiration for Hughes in a private conversation inside the cage.

"I just told Matt, 'Hey, thanks for taking the fight. I know it was a great honor to fight you. You're a true champion and you'll always be respected, so thanks for taking the fight,'" he said, after giving Hughes credit for a good game plan in the first half of the round.

Had things gone the other way in Denver, White remained convinced that there was no way Hughes would have even considered retirement.

"I honestly think that if Matt Hughes would have beat Josh Koscheck tonight, we'd be talking about who Matt was fighting next," he said. "There's no doubt about it. I know that guy, I've known him for over ten years, and he's a competitor. He's really, really upset."

The bout was the 25th in Hughes' storied UFC career, and his 54th overall. It was also the last on his current UFC contract, though he told reporters before the bout that they shouldn't expect to hear him make any decision one way or the other about his future in the cage immediately after the fight.

That's fine if it helps him cope, White suggested, but he's pretty sure he knows which direction Hughes is headed now.

"He's really upset," White said. "He wanted to win this last fight. I'm almost 100 percent positive he's going to retire. I don't think he's going to do anything else."

Valentino Rossi to Test New Aluminum Frame at Jerez

According to both GPone and MCN, Valentino Rossi and Ducati Corse will test a new aluminum frame at Jerez this week. Though the two MotoGP authorities differ on what sot of frame exactly will be used during the test (MCN says twin-spar, while GPone maintains an “open cradle” frame that leaves the motor still as a stressed object). Regardless of the style, the new chassis is reportedly made by FTR, and is another attempt by ...

Koch takes UFN 25 decision over TUF winner Brookins

Koch takes UFN 25 decision over TUF winner Brookins

Erik Koch took a unanimous decision win at Ultimate Fight Night 25 over "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Jonathan Brookins. Koch won the fight 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 on the judges cards.

Koch was strong in the first round, landing more strikes and controlling Brookins against the fence. After Koch got the better of Brookins in striking in the second round, Brookins tried for a takedown. He had a hard time bringing the fight to the ground and when he did, Koch landed on top of him. They worked back to their feet, where Koch landed leg kicks. Brookins finally got the takedown in the final minute of the second, but was not able to do much with it except take knees from Koch as they returned to their feet.

Koch continued to win the striking game in the third round, as he stuck to the game plan of punch-punch-kick and using his speed to throw Brookins off. He also continued to be successful in holding off Brookins' takedown attempts.

A one-time WEC fighter, Koch has rattled off four straight wins. His record is now 13-1, with the lone loss coming to Chad Mendes. Brookins, who won the 12th season of TUF, falls to 12-4. His last previous loss was to featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

Boxing fan Dana White hammers the ref in Floyd-Ortiz debacle

Boxing fan Dana White hammers the ref in Floyd-Ortiz debacle

If I heard "that's boxing at its best" one more time on Sunday, I was going to scream.

What was shaping up as a good fight, was destroyed by a chain of events that left fight fans shaking their heads or completely enraged at the ending of the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight.

After a headbutt by Ortiz, the fight was stopped and eventually re-started by one of the fighters. Floyd Mayweather took advantage of Ortiz's naivety and knocked him silly when his hands were down. Many are blaming referee Joe Cortez for losing control of the fight, including UFC president Dana White. White tweeted:

"Ref never sent a fighter to a neutral corner to take a point. Especially after a intentional head butt! That's why u have a ref!!!!"

White didn't choose sides between Mayweather and Ortiz, he blasted Cortez.

"You can't blame the fighters. The ref is in there to stop that [expletive] from happening! That is the worst ref'n I have ever seen in boxing EVER."

In his own sport, White has never been shy about going after judges or referees.

Frankly, everyone in the ring had a part in this mess, but clearly Cortez failed to do his job. The shocked look on his face says it all.

Title belts, illegal kicks and more notes from the Strikeforce press conference

CINCINNATI -- Scott Coker started the Strikeforce post-fight press conference by pointing out that it was filled with unbelievable fights. More notes from the press conference:

-- Main event winner Josh Barnett quickly got to the heart of questions about the Strikeforce heavyweight championship by asking that his Grand Prix final match with Daniel Cormier be for the Strikeforce belt.

"Why don't we sweeten the pot? Why not put the belt on the line? The people that he had to step over to get it a real belt."

Coker asked Barnett to slow down, saying, "Let's keep it one step at a time." They expect that the fight will take place in the first quarter of 2012. Cormier's hand was wrapped up and said that he did hurt it, so the timing rests on his health.

-- Rockhold said that his prediction of a 4-0 night by American Kickboxing Academy was not just to hype the fights. Having trained with the fighters who all won, Rockhold said that they were all ready.

"It sucks to get hit by Mo," he said of Lawal.

-- Rockhold's win was in one of the tightest fights of the night. His opponent, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza asked for a rematch. Coker said it's not a bad idea, but Rockhold didn't seem as keen on it.

-- Mo Lawal, who was fighting for the first time in over a year, mentioned earlier in the week that he was unhappy with the buzz surrounding his fights. He pointed out how Strikeforce delivered again.

"I'm glad to be back. Tonight was a great night of fights. I'm speechless because there were so many great fights. Strikeforce, we always put on great fights," he said.

-- Pat Healy said that he wasn't surprised when Maximo Blanco peppered him with illegal kicks to the head. "I don't want to say he's cheap, but he's had a few incidents."

-- Lawal wants to win to fight for the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt, unless it's vacant.

"If Dan has belt, I want it. But if it's vacant, I don't want to fight for no vacant title. Real talk," Lawal said.

Coker was unsure if that can happen because Strikeforce is still negotiating with Henderson.
