Christian Morecraft and Michael McDonald started off the UFC's Ultimate Fight Night 24 in Seattle with wins on Saturday night.
McDonald dominated his entire bout before ending in the second round with a submission. After clinching against the fence for what seemed forever, McCorkle finally accomplished a takedown. He gave up his leg which nearly resulted in a lock. Though McCorkle avoided the submission, he lost out on the dominant position and ate some elbows from Morecraft.
In the second, Morecraft started strong by landing a series of punches with McCorkle's back against the fence. He followed that with a takedown and ground and pound. Morecraft then made the mistake of kneeing McCorkle in the crotch, which gave McCorkle time to recover. That time didn't help, though, as McCorkle dove for a way-too-high shot. Morecraft grabbed McCorkle's neck, and squeezed tight for a standing guillotine. McCorkle passed out, giving Morecraft the win at 4:10 in the second round.
This was a good rebound for Morecraft, who lost his UFC debut to Stefan Struve. His record is now 7-1, while McCorkle's falls to 10-2. This is his second straight loss in the Octagon.
McDonald, Figueroa impress
After the heavyweights were in the cage, the UFC went to the other end of the spectrum with bantamweights. Michael McDonald and Edwin Figueroa then put on a show with a thrilling decision that ended with McDonald taking the decision, 30-27 on all three judges' cards.
The two started out furiously, throwing every strike a person could dream of. McDonald got the better of Figueroa, a Muay Thai specialist, landing several more strikes. He also showed good defense, ducking below what could have been a knockout kick from Figueroa. McDonald finished the round with one more big shot, dazing Figueroa as he headed back to his corner.
To start the second, Figueroa tried to land a headkick, but McDonald used it for a takedown. Figueroa rolled through for a kneebar, but wasn't able to finish and allowed McDonald to take his back. McDonald sunk in a rear naked choke, but then when that didn't work, he switched to an armbar then a triangle choke. After that, he slapped on a triangle choke/armbar combo. Somehow, Figueroa fought through every submission attempt, then took McDonald's back in the last 1o seconds of the round.
McDonald looked markedly slower by the beginning of the third round. Figueroa found his rhythm, landing punches and elbows until McDonald took him down. Figueroa reversed position, then moved to side control. After standing over McDonald and avoiding upkicks, Figueroa let the fight return to standing. McDonald brought it right back down with a takedown, and landed elbows as the final horn sounded.
Though Figueroa was the loser in the bout, he definitely won fans with his never-say-die attitude and the fact that he took the fight on just six days notice. His record falls to 7-1.
McDonald, who at 20 years old is the youngest fighter on the UFC roster, is now 12-1. Both fighters were making their UFC debuts, and definitely made an impression.

The UFC's first trip to Seattle was successful, with several young, untested fighters showing they belonged in the Octagon. Who rose above the rest?
No. 1 star -- Chan Sung Jung: In their first bout, Jung and Leonard Garcia swung wildly at each other for three rounds. They created an exciting bout that will long be remembered as one of the WEC's best, but still ended up in a loss for Jung. He changed his plan this time, fighting a more calculated bout that ended with him slapping on twister submission. It was the first twister performed in the UFC, and it earned Jung at $55,000 Submission of the Night bonus.
No. 2 star -- Amir Sadollah: Since winning the seventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Sadollah has had an up-and-down tenure in the UFC, plagued with injuries, sickness and odd losses. None of those troubles were obvious on Saturday night, as he gave DaMarques Johnson an old-fashioned beating. In the second round, Sadollah inundated Johnson with elbows, causing Johnson to tap and earning Sadollah his second straight win.
No. 3 star -- Michael McDonald and Edwin Figueroa: Smaller weights are known for putting on a show, and McDonald and Figueroa delivered. McDonald won their three-round decision with a mix of strikes and submission attempts, but Figueroa won respect by standing through every strike and making it out of every sub attempt. They both won $55,000 for a Fight of the Night bonus.
Honorable mention -- Johny Hendricks: Unfortunately, the main event ran over time, so we didn't get to see Hendricks' knockout of T.J. Waldburger. A report from on-site described it:
Hendricks connected on two powerful left hands. The back-to-back blows sent Waldburger to the mat, and the ref halted the action before Hendricks could deliver any further punishment.
Hendricks earned the Knockout of the Night bonus, good for $55,000.

It wasn't the slugfest the first fight produced, but Chan Sung Jung more than made up for the lack of big strikes by beating Leonard Garcia with a unique submission. "The Korean Zombie" showed he can fight smart as well by landing a twister to finish Garcia with just one second left in the second round in the first televised bout at Ultimate Fight Night 24 on Spike.
"I've been watching Eddie Bravo videos on YouTube for a long time," Jung said through a translator. "I kept saying during practice at Korean Top Team that I'm going to do the twister in the UFC some day. Hopefully, I'll get the Submission of the Night."
Jung (11-3, 1-0 UFC) had Garcia's back late in the second when he decided to focus on one leg. He also got a hold of Garcia's head and cranked it back. The twister puts tremendous pressure on the spine. Garcia couldn't hold out, tapped and the fight was stopped by referee Dan Miragliotta at 4:59 of the second.
Garcia (15-7, 2-3 UFC) was headed down the wrong path from the opening seconds. He's built his reputation in the UFC and WEC by going for the broke. His striking is often reckless, but he does damage and scores with judges. He won the first throwdown with the Zombie at WEC 48, in a fight many thought Jung took by decision. Garcia repeated the feat his last time out against Nam Phan.
Garcia chose to go with a more controlled style and looked to counterstrike. He never got Jung's timing down. Garcia was the victim of a takedown in the first and ate some big shots on the ground.
In the second, he landed virtually nothing and went down again when the fighters connected on kicks at the same time. Jung jumped into top control with 1:11 left in the round. Jung softened him up with some big elbows. He threw Garcia's legs to the side and took his back with 33 seconds left.
Before this fight, Jung worked with Urijah Faber's camp, Team Alpha Male. He fought with a nice gameplan, beating Garcia in eveyr phase of the game.

An injury has forced Jon Fitch to pull out of his July 2 bout with B.J. Penn.
Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Plenty of fans seemed lukewarm on the Fitch-Penn rematch at UFC 132. The UFC has an opportunity to come up with a something that'll get the juices flowing for its big Fourth of July weekend card.
Finding a fill-in isn't as easy as you'd think. The UFC has almost every fighter in the world under contract, yet its welterweight division doesn't have a ton of choices for Penn.
If healthy, Carlos Condit would be a great. The 26-year-old is now seven months removed from his devastating knockout of Dan Hardy. Because of an injury, he had to pull out of a UFC 127 fight with Chris Lytle. Condit would take the Penn fight, but his knee sounds like it may still be an issue.
"I dislocated a joint in my knee cap and did a lot of damage so I pull out of the fight. I have been rehabbing and trying to get my knee back in order. I was sparring today, I have been training all week and it still hurts, but it's healed for the most part," [Condit told MMADieHards.com. ...]
"If I get the call and they offer me the fight, I definitely would be up for that fight, I think it would be an honor to fight B.J. I would be fighting a huge legend so I think it would put a little pressure on me, (but) there's only one way to find out."
A Penn fight would be great for Anthony Johnson as well. Johnson, also a recent winner over Hardy, would be forced to stay in shape to get ready for the July fight.
"I'm staying in shape and trying to keep my weight down," Johnson [told MMADieHards.com]. "Right now I'm only about 200 pounds, but I'm full of water right now. When I run I sweat so much it looks like I just got out of a swimming pool, so if they were to tell me I have a fight in a month I know I'd be ready. The weight would be easy to come off, I'm good to go."
Johnson indicated that money might be a concern if he was offered a fight against the legendary Penn.
"Hell, if I fight B.J. they're for sure going to have to renegotiate my contract," said Johnson. "If the opportunity was presented, would I take a fight like that? Yeah. I don't say no to fights and I like to fight, if I'm winning or not, I still like to fight. So yeah, I would take that fight."
The only hitch in a Penn-Johnson fight is the potential size disparity. The 165-pound Penn faces that in every welterweight bout, but in Johnson he would battle a guy who walks into the cage as high as 195 pounds on fight night.
Who else could step up by July? Let's throw in a wild card in Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz. If he dominates Paul Daley this weekend, does Dana White think Diaz is "ready to play the game?"
Thiago Alves is scheduled to fight Rick Story at UFC 130. He could be moved back five weeks. There's also the possibility of a Diego Sanchez rematch, but that appears to a be long shot with the injuries he suffered at UFC on Versus 3 and the fact that the matchup down at lightweight was so one-sided.
