UFN 25?s Three Stars: Ellenberger, Belcher and Waldburger

UFN 25?s Three Stars: Ellenberger, Belcher and WaldburgerThe UFC's first trip to New Orleans was full of decisions, then ended with a knockout that pushed a welterweight into the title picture. Below are Cagewriter's picks for Three Stars from Ultimate Fight Night 25. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Jake Ellenberger: When Ellenberger first was matched up with Jake Shields, trash talk from Ellenberger made Shields ask, "Who is this guy?" He found out, as Ellenberger knocked out Shields in less than a minute in the main event. Shields disputed the knockout, but considering that he tried to wrestle the referee, it's safe to say it was a reasonable stoppage. With his fifth win, he is looking for a welterweight title shot.

No. 2 star -- Alan Belcher: The Louisiana-born fighter went through dangerous procedures on his eye last year that put his fighting career in doubt. Belcher didn't accept his dire prognosis from doctors. Instead, he worked hard so that he could fight again, and returned to the Octagon with a bang on Saturday night. His unrelenting strikes caused Jason MacDonald to submit in the first round.

No. 3 star -- T.J. Waldburger: If you didn't tune into the preliminary fights on Facebook, you missed out on the jiu-jitsu clinic that Waldburger put on Mike Stumpf. He submitted Stumpf in the first round with a slick transition from an armbar to a triangle choke.

Koch takes UFN 25 decision over TUF winner Brookins

Koch takes UFN 25 decision over TUF winner Brookins

Erik Koch took a unanimous decision win at Ultimate Fight Night 25 over "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Jonathan Brookins. Koch won the fight 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 on the judges cards.

Koch was strong in the first round, landing more strikes and controlling Brookins against the fence. After Koch got the better of Brookins in striking in the second round, Brookins tried for a takedown. He had a hard time bringing the fight to the ground and when he did, Koch landed on top of him. They worked back to their feet, where Koch landed leg kicks. Brookins finally got the takedown in the final minute of the second, but was not able to do much with it except take knees from Koch as they returned to their feet.

Koch continued to win the striking game in the third round, as he stuck to the game plan of punch-punch-kick and using his speed to throw Brookins off. He also continued to be successful in holding off Brookins' takedown attempts.

A one-time WEC fighter, Koch has rattled off four straight wins. His record is now 13-1, with the lone loss coming to Chad Mendes. Brookins, who won the 12th season of TUF, falls to 12-4. His last previous loss was to featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

Jake Ellenberger Knocks Out Jake Shields at UFN 25

Jake Ellenberger scored the biggest win of his career Saturday by knocking out Jake Shields in 53 seconds at UFC Fight Night 25 in New Orleans.

Grabbing the Muay Thai clinch, Ellenberger landed a knee to the body and then a knee to the head to collapse Shields forward. Quick to capitalize on his stunned opponent, Ellenberger jumped in with fast left hands for the referee stoppage.

Shields expressed that he could have continued in the post-fight interview with announcer Joe Rogan, but he sure didn't appear to be from the spectator's standpoint, as he tried to take down the referee after the stoppage. The loss was an especially difficult one for the former Strikeforce middleweight champion considering he lost his father less than three weeks ago. Shields came into the fight having only been finished once in his career, a first-round TKO suffered against Marty Armendarez back in March 2000 -- Shields' third professional MMA fight.

Ellenberger, who hasn't tasted defeat since his UFC debut in September 2009 against current No. 1 contender Carlos Condit, made the most his first high-profile fight and now finds himself in welterweight title contention with this win.

"Jake Shields is a champion," Ellenberger said. "I can't explain how I feel right now, it feels great."

With his fifth straight UFC win, Ellenberger improves his overall record to 25-5. Meanwhile, Shields' record slides to 26-6-1.
