Machida: A fight with Davis would be a ?classic match-up of styles?

Our friends at Yahoo! Sports Brazil caught up with Lyoto Machida over the weekend and his coach Jorge Guimares. They found out that Machida is very close to signing a fight with Phil Davis, which Machida sees as a good match-up.

"It would be a classic match-up between styles. (Phil) Davis is a natural born wrestler. I would have to adjust some aspects in my game to face it as an equal. But this ability to change and learn has always been one of my strongest characteristics. There will be no problem," said the fighter.

Machida has faced, and beaten, fighters with strong wrestling backgrounds in the past. His striking is powerful enough to have overcome the wrestling strength of both Rashad Evans and Randy Couture. Do you think it's enough to take out an undefeated rising star like Davis? Or is Davis ready to beat Machida? Tell us your thoughts in the comments or on Facebook.

MMA Marketplace: Get your own authentic MMA championship belt

To get an authentic MMA championship belt, you can put in years of hard work, sacrifice and training to earn it, or you can drop $1,600 on a WAMMA belt on eBay. Look, it's so shiny!

WAMMA was the organization that wanted to create an undisputed champ at every weight class, regardless of what promotion they fought in. Fedor Emelianenko held the WAMMA heavyweight title. In this picture from November 2009, Fabricio Werdum can be seen jokingly grabbing at Fedor's WAMMA belt, but WAMMA barely made a blip among most MMA fans.

What they did make was a pretty, pretty belt, and it can be yours for a starting bid at $1,595 plus shipping on eBay.

Rua continues the Brazilian party at UFC 134 with KO of Griffin

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua left no doubt about his abilities, knocking out Forrest Griffin in the first round of their rematch at UFC 134 on Saturday night. Rua was one of the many Brazilian-born fighters to win in front of the raucous crowd in Rio de Janeiro.

"Shogun" took advantage of Griffin's aggressiveness, landing a right as Griffin moved in to attack. That knocked Griffin to the ground. Rua finished up with several hammer strikes until the fight was stopped at 1:53 in the first round.

After the bout, a jubilant "Shogun" thanked Brazil several times. Like all of the Brazilian fighters who won at UFC 134, Rua was ecstatic to get to fight in front of a home crowd, and the crowd was just as happy to have Rua win for them.

Griffin won their first fight, at UFC 74 in 2007, with a rear-naked choke. It was Rua's first fight in the UFC after a successful career in PRIDE, and a win that earned Griffin a title shot. Since then, both fighters have held the UFC light heavyweight belt, though neither was able to defend it.

Rua lost the belt to Jon Jones in March, but showed that he is still part of the elite in a crowded UFC light heavyweight field. Griffin, on the other hand, is struggling to show that he belongs with the best. Since winning the belt, he is 2-3.

UFC 134: Stanislav Nedkov Comes Back to Knock Out Luiz Cane

Filed under:

In a great back-and-forth battle at UFC 134, Stanislav Nedkov stayed undefeated in mixed martial arts by defeating the Brazilian Luiz Cane in front of a partisan crowd in Rio de Janeiro.

Nedkov was making his UFC debut and was an underdog against the more experienced Cane, and in the early going it appeared that Cane was getting the upper hand with his striking. But after looking stiff in the early going, Nedkov began to look more comfortable with his punching combinations, and eventually a right-left combination hurt Cane and had him running away.

From there Nedkov gave chase, landed a few more punches and eventually knocked Cane down and finished him with more punches on the ground. If anything the referee's stoppage was slow; Nedkov clearly had Cane out.

Nedkov's MMA record now improves to 12-0, and there's no question that he deserves to be considered one of the rising stars of the light heavyweight division. He's a 29-year-old with some big fights ahead of him.

Cane has now lost three of his last four, and all three losses were by first-round TKO. Cane is talented, but he needs to regroup and get his career back on track.
